Steps to achieve your goal
Try out the following steps if you want to get success with designing your very own chair.
Step 1: Start unscrewing the seats from armatures and the chairbacks. Set the screws aside and make sure that you save the screws.
Step 2: All the chairs should be lined up side by side and only a distance of a few inches should be between the chairs. Try measuring the distance from one end of the row to another. Next you add up 4 inches to the measured distance. Now it is time to measure the depth of one of the removed seats. Start cutting the wooden plank with those particular measurements. Sand the edges of the plank and paint the plank as you desire.
Step 3: Allow the plank to dry up and once it has then it is time to place the plank atop your chairs. Make use of a pencil and then you need to mark that particular point at which the plank meets the armature screw holes and the screw holes at the back of the chair.
Step 4: Now it is time that you remove the plank. Pilot holes need to be drilled at each marked point. It is time to place the plank back on to the chairs. You need to ensure that the pilot holes are aligned. You also need to mark the point where the front chair is meeting the plank underside and you need to trace the way along the tip of the leg. Again you should remove your plank.
Step 5: It is time to put your drilling bit to use. It is essential that the drill bit correspond to the dowel size. Now there needs to be ½ inch deep bore within the marking of your pencil. However, make sure that you do not end up drilling all the way through the plank.
Step 6: Start applying the wood glue to the dowels. Now the plank needs to be positioned atop the chairs one more time. The bored holes need to be pressed down the dowels. Start screwing the back of your plank to the back of the chair and the armatures need to be reattached as well. The reattachment will be done with the help of those screws that you had removed earlier.
Now make sure that weight is placed on the plank and it should be allowed to dry. Now your bench is ready to use. Here is a complete picture for your help.
Now if you want to add a different touch to your chair bench then you may have a separate color for the plank that you attached to the chairs. The contrast may be a good idea if you want to give a funky kind of a look to your chair bench.
Now for painting the plank you will first have to dust the bench. Make it a point that the old paint is removed through the paint stripper. Sand the plank. Make sure that the excess specks of paint are wiped off as well. Once you are done with this step then you can simply choose a paint of your choice and paint the plank.
Look at this picture, at this point a different layer of paint can be added to the plank.
The innovation is completely up to you so do try out new ideas and make your bench exquisite with your sense of creativity. You will be happy with the end results.
